Mary Soderberg

Mary A. Soderberg was appointed secretary of the budget by Governor Edward G. Rendell and began serving in this position on July 7, 2008 .

As the leader of the Office of the Budget, Secretary Soderberg has overall responsibility for the preparation of the Governor’s budget and its implementation after legislative enactment. She is also responsible for maintaining the commonwealth’s accounting, payroll, debt issuance and financial reporting systems and programs.

Prior to her appointment as secretary of the budget, Soderberg had served since August 2005 as executive deputy secretary of the budget and chief financial officer of the commonwealth.In that position, she oversaw all finance-related aspects of the state government’s administration, including budget preparation, budget implementation, financial reporting, debt administration, payment processing, payroll operations and internal auditing.

Before joining the budget office, Soderberg was vice chancellor for finance and administration of the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education for two years.  Her responsibilities for the 14 public universities in the system included policy development and system-wide leadership in the areas of budgeting, procurement, accounting, payroll, investment and capital planning and financing.

Soderberg was the executive director of the House Democratic Appropriations Committee from 1992 to 2003. Prior to her service with the General Assembly, Soderberg was a presidential management intern with the U.S. Information Agency in Washington , D.C. , D.C. She was a Peace Corps volunteer in the Philippines from 1973 to 1975.    

Soderberg earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Wisconsin of Wisconsin and a master’s degree in public administration from The Pennsylvania State University.She lives in Camp Hill with her husband and their son.
